Essential software

To run the Instant Sound Show demos you'll need to extra items of software. For demos, 1 to 9 you need Quicktime. To run demos 10, 11 and 12 you'll need Audacity. Both these items are free to download. Please read our friendly disclaimer before downloading and installing anything on your computer for these shows.

Quicktime

Quicktime

Quicktime is used to create the waveforms in real-time (i.e. as the sounds are playing) on demos such as the oscilloscope trace.

Quicktime is made by Apple and comes with the Mac OSX operating system, so Mac users don't have to download it. PC users may have Quicktime installed already, for instance if they are using iTunes. If you need Quicktime or want to update to a more recent version, click here.

NB When you go to the Apple Quicktime pages, don't worry about any invitations to buy Quicktime Pro. The standard version of Quicktime is all you need to run the Instant Sound Show.

Audacity

Audacity

Audacity is a great find for anyone who wants to experiment with sound. This is an open-source (ie. free) sound editing programme - for full details of the licence conditions, see the Audacity website. You can use Audacity to cut out chunks out of sounds, boost sound levels, play sounds backwards, change their pitch, add reverb - you name it!
